There have been several author
events in Skye and Lochalsh Area aimed at adults. The most successful
have been those which have featured:
a fairly well known
name e.g. John Ridgway, Anne MacLeod
a Scottish author
or a Scottish subject e.g. a talk by Cherry Good on John Muir,
conservationist
talks on travel-related
subjects, especially when accompanied by a slide show
Poets generally don’t get a very good turnout, probably because it’s a
specialist area.
Publicity is very important. Get posters out well in advance, put a
piece in the local press the week before and get it mentioned on local
radio if possible.
Timing
We have found that Wednesday evenings work best in Portree, but check
that your date doesn’t clash with other local events or promotions.
However, as author visits have to be booked well in advance it isn’t
possible to know what competition will come from other places. e.g.
local theatre, music events, etc.
Don’t put on author visits during the Easter or October school holidays,
too many people are away.
If it’s a “Writers in Scotland”
event, make sure you have all the paperwork ready to be signed and that
you have the cheque to give to the writer.
Check all equipment such as slide projectors etc at least 4 weeks before
the event, to allow time to make repairs or find replacements.
