Power Readers

The Power Readers Scheme started in 1996. It was  devised by a working group of School Librarians, English Teachers, the Principal Schools Librarian and the English Advisor, with an aim to promote personal reading.

Pupils have the opportunity to achieve three awards, which they must complete in the order Bronze (10 books), Silver (15 books) and Gold (20 books).   Progress towards each level is recorded in a booklet, which contains more information on the details of the scheme.   While they are on each level they must complete various pieces of work related to the books which they have chosen to read.   These include a book review, author or character profile, book cover and poster

For instance, at bronze level they must read a short story, poetry book, award-winning book, Scottish book and a non-fiction book.   The remaining five books should each be of a different genre chosen by the pupil.

Pupils are assigned a tutor, usually a member of staff within the school or sometimes a senior pupil, whose role is to monitor and assist progress throughout the scheme.   Once the tutor has been satisfied that a level has been completed, the pupil will receive a certificate and be eligible to progress onto the next level.

Power Readers is part of the Secondary curriculum but represents a positive commitment by the child to reading in his or her leisure time.
