The Blue Hen
by Des Dillon
Published by  Sandstone Press

I really enjoyed reading this.   It’s about two friends who live in Coatbridge in the late seventies and early eighties.   They lose their jobs and the book deals with their struggle to cope with life and its hardships.

This book is set in Coatbridge, Glasgow in the seventies with the fall of the coal and steel industry.   It follows two boys in a struggle to survive after their work closed.   I enjoyed this book and felt it was almost autobiographical.   I would have liked this book to have a follow up.

The White Cliffs
  by Suhayl Saadi
Published by Sandstone Press

The White Cliffs is an interesting read which explores the possibilities of fate.  Set against an unsavoury backdrop in a south-coast seaside resort.  The surreal unwinding of the tale lingers long after the book is finally closed.

An accident waiting to happen by Vincent BanvilleThis is a story set in Dublin about a private investigator.   It’s fast moving with loads of action and some wit.   It is one of a series.

Maggie’s Story

Maggie’s Story by Sheila O’Flanagan

Maggie is having a mid-life crisis.   A romantic novel given to her by an author she has to interview adds to her discontent.   Her family are confused by her behaviour!   I enjoyed the humour of this and the tension of whether or not she would have an affair.

No dress rehearsal
by Marian Keyes

Published by Open Door

No dress rehearsal by Marian KeyesIt’s not often you read a book where the main character dies on the first page, but that’s what happens here. Lizzie’s dead, but she doesn’t know it. How she and her family cope with her death is sad and funny. I really enjoyed “No dress Rehearsal” because it made me think about my life and what is really important to me. The story stayed with me a long time after I closed the book.

Second Chance

Second Chance by Patricia Scanlan
I thought this book might be quite depressing, as the main character is out of work, living with his in-laws, and the story starts with an argument!   However, it turned out to be very positive – a modern fairy tale, where an act of courage results in a change of fortune.
