"The
more you read,
the more things you will know.
The more that
you learn the more
places you'll go."

One of the best
things about storytime are the positive feelings
you can foster around books and book sharing. This good
feeling can only be conveyed if you are having a good time
yourself so relax and enjoy the experience of reading to
your child. When they sense that you are having fun, they
will, too.
It is important
to keep storytimes fun and inviting. Enjoy the language,
rhyme and rhythm in the books you choose. Savour those
words not used in daily conversation but that appear in
the rich language of books, words such as higgelty-piggelty and rumpus.

Even very young
children can learn to love books. Encourage your child to
help turn the pages. This will teach them how to hold a
book properly and help them develop a sense that in
English we read from left to right, top to bottom.
By having books
in every room of your home, the car and the changing bag
you can be sure of creating lots of opportunities for you
and your child to enjoy sharing books. Books are a
portable form of entertainment that a child can enjoy
alone or in company.
Books and rhymes
can be lively when your child is ready to play and quieter
as your child is tired and wants to settle down.
|
Singing rhymes and
songs together is a lovely way to bond with your child and
will help them learn how to
talk.
Sharing books,
stories, songs and rhymes builds vocabulary and the
language
and listening skills which are essential in getting children
ready to enjoy school.

What kinds of
books work best?
Books that:
-
Have clear pictures
- Have
a simple story
- Are
not too long
- Have
pictures of things that are familiar to your child
-
Show action and
detail in the pictures
- Are
interesting to your child.

Books, stories,
songs and rhymes are for all the family not just mummies.
Look carefully
at the illustrations and talk about the pictures together,
this can be a useful way of enjoying books written in
unfamiliar language.
Make storytime
special curl up in a comfortable chair and turn off the TV
and Radio so you can hear properly.
When friends and
family visit get them to join in sharing books and stories
too!
